Chelsea Language Academy considers a "prestigious university" to mean a university that is either ranked within the top 100 of the World's Best Universities in the annual ranking published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Institute of Higher Education, or a university in Canada that has regularly appeared among the top 10 universities in its category as judged by Maclean's magazine, which publishes Canada's most respected ranking of universities in Canada (These rankings are available at http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2007/ranking2007.htm and http://www.macleans.ca/education/rankings.jsp , respectively).

The school accepts professional teaching certificates or degrees that were earned at a university based in Canada, The United States, Ireland or the United Kingdom. It also accepts professional teaching certificates from widely recognized TESL / TESOL programs ( E.g., CELTA, and programs recognized by TESL Canada).

Background checks are performed on teacher applicants using at least two third-party companies and they are conducted in compliance with the laws of the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario.

Chelsea Language Academy generally considers good grades to be the achievement of a cumulative class ranking of the 70th percentile or higher (the top 30% of the class). If the teacher applicant's alma mater does not release relative class rankings, then the applicant should achieve a cumulative overall average grade equivalent to the letter grade of B or higher.

Chelsea Language Academy is an equal opportunity employer and it does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, age, creed or in any other way that would be contrary to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Anyone, regardless of their race may work at Chelsea Language Academy if they are qualified. The school's requirement in most cases that teachers have a second-generation native English speaking background is not meant to exclude applicants who may be considered visible minorities in Canada. An English teacher's race is completely irrelevant.

In rare and special cases, Chelsea Language Academy reserves the right to exempt otherwise superb candidates from any part of its standard, published hiring criteria as it deems appropriate. Nevertheless, no teacher, either full or part-time, will ever be hired by the school without an accredited university degree and demonstrably excellent English skills (both written and verbal).

Tests scores for IQ, personality and grammar:

The management at Chelsea Language Academy believe it is difficult or impossible to assess a person's intelligence and personality with any one method. The school therefore employs a variety of methods to identify and hire the best teachers possible.

Of course, Chelsea Language Academy is an English school; so, the degree to which a potential teacher is articulate, emotionally stable, personable, patient and creative is viewed as more important than their analytical ability. That being said, the school still requires its teachers to demonstrate a reasonable degree of all-round intelligence.

Teachers who are hired must successfully complete brief, timed tests of their reasoning skills and writing abilities. Their personality and general teaching abilities are characterized by way of psychometric testing, interviews, references from prior employers/professors/students and via direct observation of their interactions with volunteer students at Chelsea Language Academy.

Once hired, teachers are evaluated by management on an ongoing basis. And, students are given the opportunity to anonymously evaluate teachers each week and offer suggestions for changes they think could improve a class.
